August 23,1799
Hello, my lovely viewers, hope you are doing so very well i hope this because it seems as though our great napoleon has had many great victories such as The Battle of The Pyramids, he just suffered a brutal loss to the British fleet led my the evil Nelson.
Napoleon, a fleet and an army sailed from Toulon in May; he had over 250 transports and 13‘ships of the line’. After capturing Malta while on the way, 40,000 French landed in Egypt on July 1st. They captured Alexandria and marched on Cairo. Egypt was under the practical control of the Mameluke military.
Napoleon’s force had more than just troops. He had bought with him of civilian scientists who were to create the Institute of Egypt in Cairo, to both learn from the east, and begin to ‘civilize’ it. Napoleon claimed he was there to defend Islam and Egyptian interests, but he wasn’t believed and rebellions began.Egypt might not be controlled by the British, but it was colonized by them at the time, and the Mameluke rulers were no happier to see Napoleon. An Egyptian army marched to meet the French, clashing at the Battle of the Pyramids on July 21st. A struggle of military eras, it was a clear victory for Napoleon, and Cairo was occupied. I am just so happy to see that our great Napoleon has had so many great triumphs.
But,then, tragedy struck. the French were in Battle and were fighting hard. meanwhile, Horatio Nelson of the British Army destroyed Napoleons ships, leaving him and his crew abandoned.this is a huge blow on the French Military. this campaign has now cost the french military huge amounts of money for repairs, brand new equipment, as well as many men who were lost to Egypt. This small problem did not stop our great hero though. He became the Ruler of Egypt. On July 19, 1799. Napoleon's troops while still stranded in Egypt discovered something called the Rosetta stone. This slab of stone is the secret to translating Egypt's most ancient languages: Demotic and hieroglyphs, as well as an early for of Greek alphabet. this will be so useful in translating many ancient texts and it will help us better our understanding the lives of those who came before us.
I will keep you updated if I hear any more news of this(Victory? Defeat?)
as always,
We have reached out to Napoleon for his take on the battle and he had a few words to add:
"Today, we may have not been victorious. Today we might have been defeated. They may have destroyed our ships, they may have sunk our equipment. but they did NOT break our spirit. We are still victorious. We took Alexandria, not the British. We took Cairo, not the British. I was KING OF EGYPT! Not the British. I have just returned from there to lead France. but there was so much we accomplished. We found the stone that will help us decipher three ancient and foreign new languages. We have studied the way of ancient Egyptians and brought their way of life back.So no,I do not think we lost today. I think today, Today we just took a step back. We are all here, we have had few casualties, we just dont have ships."
